CinderLace was founded by H. J., who is a former Dancer, teacher, Graphic Designer.
H.J. was trying to find quality leather earrings that didn't overtake her due to its size and color and found very few options. She wanted to find something minimal, small, and made of quality materials. However, she kept running into genuine leather and stainless steel metal. So she decided to make her own.
After researching what quality materials would be best decided to go with sterling silver, titanium, and Italian full grain Leather. Sterling silver is a high quality classy metal that most can wear. Titanium is a true alloy-free metal for those who needs a hypoallergenic option.
While searching for leather she learned that genuine leather is considered a lower quality while full grain leather is the best, so why not go with the more durable option. Next she looked into how the leather is tanned and dyed. Two of the most commonly used processes are chrome tanned, which uses a very toxic process and the leather can become toxic over time. Vegetable tanned leather, however, uses a slower but natural process. CinderLace has chosen to use veg tanned leather. When it came to dyes, H.J. selected to use a safe and natural option that has been used since the middle ages and can be used with common household items. (More below)
To add patterns and personal touches, H.J. used skills she learned from wood burning and applied them to Leather (pyrography).
Now There is an option for you and we are so happy to share it.
A note about your Product
Silver & Titanium
Silver easily tarnishes, so we polished your jewelry right before packaging. Silver will need polishing from time to time. While titanium is low maintenance and does not require polishing, you may polish it to give it a little more shine.
Leather
We use high quality full grain leather and generously treat it before it gets to you. If you see little oil marks on your packaging, that's why. Here are some tips on how to care for your leather so it lasts and looks beautiful. There are many different options for conditioning leather. We use a combination of the following natural products: olive oil, neatsfoot, and we always seal with beeswax. Since leather can dry and crack over time, we recommend that you periodically condition your leather jewelry. You can choose to use something else, just be aware that some products can darken your leather more than others. If you accidentally get your leather wet doing dishes, got in the shower, etc. don't worry: just dab it dry, lay it flat to dry, and condition it with your preferred leather conditioner. It should be just fine.
Please remember that because we use vegetable tanned leather with a natural nontoxic dying processes it can patina overtime, which will give you a beautiful look.
